The New Green Heretics: Ecological Modernization as the Future of Environmentalism
Since the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, modern environmentalism has been characterized by a trinity of beliefs: small-is-beautiful; technological progress is out-of-control; and we must live closer to nature in order to prevent ecological armageddon. But over the last decade, a new generation of green thinkers have challenged these assumptions, arguing that urbanization reduces the human population, large and centralized energy and agricultural production, such as nuclear power plants and biotechnologies, reduce the human impact on wilderness, wildlife and the biosphere, and the over-arching process of modernization makes all of the above possible. At 12 Noon on Thursday, February 10, Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger, co-founders of the Breakthrough Institute and co-authors of the seminal 2004 “The Death of Environmentalism” will speak at Brown University’s Urban Environmental Lab to argue that the future of environmentalism lies with these new heretics, and that the spectacular collapse of cap and trade and the prospects of a U.N. treaty on global warming makes the work of developing this paradigm of ecological modernization all the more urgent.
