3. Apply for Greenpeace’s Semester-Long Activist Training

4. Summer Study Abroad on Climate Change/Sust. Dev. in Latin Am. and the Carib.

Events:

5. Climate Change Forum at AS220 – Monday

1. Take the Beyond the Bottle Online Pledge!

If you haven’t yet taken the Beyond the Bottle paper or online pledge to choose tap water over bottled water, support initiatives against bottled water, and support pro-public water infrastructure development, click the link below to view the pledge text and add your name!

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dC1NbVloRlczQmN4ZEdMbWVxbEtzUWc6MA

More info: beyondthebottle@gmail.com

2. Apply to be a BOLT Leader!

What is a BOLT Leader?

A BOLT Leader is a sophomore, junior or senior who spends the Spring becoming proficient in medical, wilderness, and group facilitation skills. Leaders begin the following Fall semester by facilitating a five-day backpacking trip in the White Mountains in late August and keeping their BOLT group together throughout the year. Leaders provide the foundation for BOLT’s network of advising and support for sophomores and new transfers.

What does BOLT offer its community of leaders?

Being a BOLT leader is a great opportunity to continue developing skills of leadership and facilitation in a new, exciting context with an awesome group of 35 dynamic students.
You’ll learn:

* inclusive facilitation skills
* setting up a proper campsite
* map & compass skills
* low impact camping and living in and with nature
* backcountry cooking
* CPR and Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder
* the fundamentals of being a fun and effective group leader

In the Fall, you’ll become both a friend and a resource for 8 rising sophomores and transfer students. Many BOLT groups stay together throughout the Fall semester, and many for much longer.

How to Apply

All you need to do now is give us your contact information at http://brown.edu/Student_Services/BOLT/lead-app/index.html by Decemeber 11th. Then we’ll email you a link to the full application (basically a few essays), which is due in mid-January.

Send any questions you have to boltmanagers@gmail.com, and visit www.brown.edu/bolt for more info!

3. Apply for Greenpeace’s Semester-Long Activist Training

The Greenpeace Organizing Term is an action-filled semester and the best hands-on training for students to become environmental leaders. You’ll be investing in your leadership skills, getting training in grassroots organizing, media, coalition building, direct action, and campaign strategy. And you’ll travel with Greenpeace around the country or world to campaign and join a team of incredible activists working to protect the planet.
GOT students return to their campuses with vastly increased skills, and many go on to work for Greenpeace or other campaigning organizations.
The Spring 2010 GOT Application is still open, though not for too much longer – tell your friends and classmates to apply today!
http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/getinvolved/greenpeace-organizing-term

4. Summer Study Abroad on Climate Change/Sust. Dev. in Latin Am. and the Carib.

The Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) introduces an eight-week Study Abroad Program, focusing on Climate Change and Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through professional training, hands-on learning, and cultural immersion, students will embark on experiencing how global climate change influences sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Students will have the opportunity to explore firsthand the diverse direct and indirect effects of a changing climate on natural and human systems. Students are encouraged both individually and as a group to delve into complex topics and address challenging questions relevant to contemporary regional and national climate change problems.

5. Climate Change Forum at AS220 – Monday

Come learn about the hot environmental issues of today from regional experts. Join us for Happy Hour at AS220! Heard of “climate change”? It’s a big issue. But did you ever wonder what it means for YOU, where you LIVE? Ever wonder if there’s anything you can DO that would make a difference? Join Sandra Brownell, of the Environmental Protection Agency, and other community members to discuss these topics! AS220 (115 Empire St.) Monday November 16th, 5:30 pm

Part of the Science Café Series

To get on the weekly emPOWER Digest, please send a one-line heading and one-paragraph blurb about your event or announcement by Saturday night to Ari@empowerbrown.org for publication in the following morning’s Digest.

Events:
8. Free Screening of “Tapped,” Tuesday, November 10th
“Tapped” is a 2009 documentary about the effects of the bottled water industry on America’s economy, environment, and public health. A coalition of Brown University student groups and the Environment Council of Rhode Island are sponsoring a free, public screening of “Tapped” on Tuesday, November 10, at 8:00 pm in the Salomon Center on the Main Green (91 Waterman Street).
Americans spent $15 billion on bottled water in 2007, a 30-fold increase in consumption per capita since 1976. Producing these bottles used the equivalent of 17 million barrels of oil, excluding the cost of transportation. Whereas bottled water costs $7.50 to $11.00 per gallon, tap water costs $0.01 per gallon. 24% of bottled water sold in the US, including Dasani and Aquafina, is not spring water but simply purified, repackaged tap water.
Compared to bottled water, tap water is regulated more rigorously and tested more frequently by the EPA. Bisphenol-A, the chemical from which 5-gallon water cooler jugs are made, has been linked in 200 independent studies to illnesses including obesity, prostate cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, and brain disorders. More info: beyondthebottle@gmail.com

9. Ask Your Legislators Questions About the Environment (and other issues)
Join the Brown Democrats for a discussion with our representatives, State Rep. Edie Ajello and State Senator Rhoda Perry, about major issues currently facing the RI legislature. This event, entitled ‘Better Know Your District’, will take place on Tuesday, November 10, at 8 pm in Wilson 101. Our legislators also look forward to taking questions and hearing about what is important to you, so be sure to ask them about their views and about pending environmental bills! We hope to see you there! More info: Jeremy_Feigenbaum@Brown.edu

10. Hear Sen. Whitehouse Speak About the Environment (and other issues)
The second event in the Democrats’ Better Know Your District series will take place on Friday, November 13, at 2 pm in Salomon 101. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse will give an update from DC and then take questions on issues ranging from health care reform to cap-and-trade. We hope you can make it! More info: Jeremy_Feigenbaum@Brown.edu

also, forward the petition paige sent to ALL of your friends AT BROWN (at brown only)!

Now that we’ve gone through that, I present to you, the BTB Minutes.

Beyond the Bottle Agenda, 11/01/09

1. Intros – Happy November! – 2 new people: Welcome, Areebah and Kayleigh!

2. Coke Week of Action check-in: Reports from people who staffed it: how’d it go?; people’s reactions; *final tally of calls

3. Steering Committee – Meetings will be Wednesdays at 8:00 in the Ivy Room: Devin, Ambika, Talia, Paige, Ben, and Ari have committed to being a steady Steering Committee and will be here every week. Everyone is welcome however often you would like to attend.

4. Website! It’d be great to get this up and running before the BUCC meeting so that we can tell them we have a website. Gabi and Matt are going to work together on this; so will Paige, maybe.

5. Ben – update about BUDS

a. Will install new faucets at the Gate and Ivy Room that are tall enough for bottles to fit underneath

b. Ordered samples of reusable bottles – will be on-sale in Lil Jo’s with our logo on them! – Hooray, Stephen and his family business!

c. Will have to talk to them about this coalition we want to form so that we don’t blindside them.

6. Tabling at JWW – Sign-ups

a. We still need more people for certain slots! Please sign up if possible!

7. Admin

b. Clay arrives to spread his knowledge!

i. BUCC is not bureaucratic – don’t need a formal resolution – reason to meet with her is to talk to her and make sure that our proposal is crafted in a way that she likes. Good to have a hand-out, have a visual; don’t have a presentation

ii. Committee is good: make it concrete, give it deadlines and goals

c. E-mail Hanna (Ruth’s assistant) to set up meeting tomorrow before Ruth’s office hours to give us feedback – Ben will do this

d. Ruth’s office hours – who can go at 3:30/45? Ambika, Paige, Ben will do it!

2. Dems and Oxfam want to cosponsor, no commitment yet

3. Ari and Paige may have other funding leads

iii. Outreach to other student groups (for funding and/or publicity/cosponsorship) – everyone tell your friends

iv. Publicity – Matt will do poster; we will tableslip on Friday lunch, Sunday (Ratty only), Monday, and Tuesday. Tableslippers for Fri and Sun are Jonathan, Jason, Koushiki, and Cathy; rest we’ll decide next time.

b. JWW tabling

i. Everyone sign up!

ii. Don’t worry about not having done it before – we’ll make sure you’re not alone the first time

iii. It’s really fun and rewarding – people are friendly and you educate them!

9. BuDS

a. We’ll be doing signage in Jo’s, the Gate, the Ivy Room.

i. BUDS will hang up whatever we give them; it’s up to us to make it and give it to them.

ii. Small group interested in scoping out those three places to figure out what signage would be appropriate? Areebah is interested!

350 Recap

Keally: Explains concept of 350 ppm of carbon dioxide; what the day was about: to put pressures on world leaders to develop a fair, ambitious, and binding treaty at Copenhagen. Took a photo of Brown students sitting in 350 shape. Joined rally at Waterplace Park. Watson scholars from Africa spoke, gave a global perspective.

Project Updates

CCURB: Explained what CCURB is. Info session last week was great, brought new people into the room. Tonight will be working on letters of interest. Elizabeth_Kimzey@Brown.edu

BtB: We have a bunch of exciting things coming up – a group trying to get Brown to eliminate supply and demand of watered bottles on campus. On agenda to present to BUCC Nov 17th, and a movie screening on the 10th. Over the next few weeks are gonna table a shitton, taste test and pledges… want to gather a substantial stack to bring to BUCC meeting.

National Coca Cola week of action – asking that Dasani water be labeled that it comes from municipal sources. Be sure you come by the table that day!

Really great meeting w/BUDS.. super exciting. Exciting. Welcoming. (beyondthebottle@gmail.com)

Low-flow Showerheads: Tim Dingman (dingman.tim@gmail.com) couldn’t make it, but if people are interested in this, e-mail him.
