Dear BtB,
Great meeting tonight! We discussed an awful lot, but it was quite productive. At the bottom of this are the meeting minutes.
A Bunch of Things I Forgot to Announce:
1. I’m going to buy the domain name beyondthebottle.org, so that we can have a blog/info site!
2. Look out for a feature article about BtB in the BDH sometime this week!
3. WEBINAR “about bottled water alternatives, focusing specifically on how colleges and universities can reduce their environmental impact by switching to tap water” – FREE! https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/656205635 to register. October 29th, 3-4:15 p.m. Everyone should attend if you can!
Action Items for Next Week:Everyone – start feeling out your groups for possible BUCC endorsement (see below for more on that) – but don’t have anyone make an official proposal yet since we don’t know exactly what the text of our proposal is yet! brainstorm more groups! Get creative! (Athletic teams?) Everyone – tabling/taste tests in JWW for the next month! Look out for the googledoc sign-up sheet.Members of Administration team will get together to draft BUCC proposal for all to discuss at next meeting Brenda – look into NativeWater, other possible alternative bottled watersJonathan – follow up with Clay and Talia about what our BUCC presentation will look likeZach and Matt – posters/tableslips from Madeleine once we have confirmation. Madeleine – movie screening details – confirm date/time/location? Are we just gonna go with FLOW? Let’s talk.
Ben, Matt, Owen – Can we pleeeease schedule a meeting with elusive BUDS officials? Jason(/Ben) – beg BUDS officials to participate in the webinar! (About to forward you the info)
Upcoming Events:Nov 10th – Movie ScreeningNov 17th – BUCC Presentation
MINUTES:
Updates:
Jason: met with director of dining operations of RISD (inspired by RISD chef at BxD); this semester they have rolled out a big plan: gave out metal bottles to all freshmen; changed how meal plans work so that people don’t spend extra on water bottles; switched over to NativeWater (biodegradable bottle; doesn’t expire); doesn’t have an analysis yet but will send us report c. Dec. when she knows. Re: emergency water bottle supply: they’re not in the same boat we are.
Ambika: Problems that we’ve run into with the Brown administration, they have found a way around. Money-maker issue – it’s more important to be sustainable, they decided! We can apply a lot of their solutions. Brita filters on taps across campus?
Ari: Jon Stewart from Think Outside the Bottle says: gather pledges and endorsements from students and student groups (respectively) in prep for the BUCC meeting. Exciting conference call sometime this week!
Brainstorm of groups that we can ask for endorsement of our proposed BUCC resolution. Feel free to start contacting your friends in these groups and feeling them out about this; by next week’s meeting we will hopefully have an actual endorsement they can sign:
Jonathan – SuFI
Jason – BOLT, SAO
Zachery – Brown Dems
Madeleine – EcoReps (Maddy, we figured this would make sense, but would let us know if it’s not possible – may be tricky since you’re a Facilities group?)
Ambika – Janus Forum, BxD, BRYTE, Archy DUG
Brenda – OLEEP
Priya/Brenda – UCAAP, Swearer Center
Carmen – Democracy Matters, West House, Unitarians, Geology
Ari – Brown Derbies, Meiklejohn, emPOWER, Environmental Studies, Hillel, Media Services, a cappella connections, Interfaith House, AEPi, UFB?, BWRFC, Grad Student Council
Paige – Hillel, MHOP, Sustainable Spencer, Millennium Project, Student Labor Alliance, BSI, Egyptology DUG, Christian Fellowship, Capital Good Fund, a cappella connections, Interfaith House, Class Boards, Disco Inferno, Sigma/BMRFC
Libby – CCURB (will look more into this – complicated because overseen by administrative committee)
Specific “Asks” from the BUCC/Recommendations [a sampling of ideas]:
Water filling stations in water fountains;
Brita filters;
Commit to not using water bottles at events;
Filtration systems;
Tap water dispensers in every campus eatery;
Convert any necessary water bottles to biodegradable containers
RISD has flavored water in the soda fountains – commissioned specially for them
Provide reusable bottles – either give them out to freshmen or sell them through BUDS
Three components of our presentation:
1. Why this issue is important and why it’s urgent
2. What we’ve done
3. What we want
Peace out.
