3. One Million Calls for Clean Energy – Take 2 Minutes to Make a Difference!
Imagine what would happen if right now, one million Americans contacted Congress and demanded clean energy and bold solutions to climate change… It could absolutely change the world!
Well now you can actually participate in an historic effort to do just that. It’s called One Million Calls for Clean Energy. Click to their site, www.OneMillionCalls.org/intro and you can instantly sign a petition AND send a fast email to your Senators. You can even leave voice mail if you want!
The timing of all this is urgent because right now your Senators are debating a bill for clean energy and climate solutions that’s so critical, Al Gore called it “This most important legislation ever considered by Congress!”

5. The Breakthrough Institute Announces 2010 Summer Fellows Program
The Breakthrough Institute is seeking up to ten of the country’s top young

its young leaders initiative, Breakthrough Generation. Fellowships are
highly competitive — in 2009, 5 percent of applicants were accepted — and
involve cutting-edge writing, research, and analysis on energy/climate and
national security issues.
In 2010, Breakthrough Fellows will divide into an energy and climate team
and a national security team.

6. The Summer of Solutions: Calling All Green Economy Leaders
Are you interested in building your capacity to turn community-based green
economy solutions into a career-path? Or want to help train other young
people in doing so?
The Summer of Solutions (www.summerofsolutions.org) is a grassroots program that trains pre- through post-college age leaders in community organizing, social entrepreneurship, and sustainable community development. It’s already resulted in new energy co-ops, green jobs programs, urban farms, community-energy projects, and community engagement in local redevelopment. It’s grown from just our one program in St. Paul to nine nationwide – and next year, we’re shooting for 15. You can see our stories at www.solutionaries.net.

8. Free Screening of “Tapped,” Tuesday, November 10th
“Tapped” is a 2009 documentary about the effects of the bottled water industry on America’s economy, environment, and public health. A coalition of Brown University student groups and the Environment Council of Rhode Island are sponsoring a free, public screening of “Tapped” on Tuesday, November 10, at 8:00 pm in the Salomon Center on the Main Green (91 Waterman Street).
Americans spent $15 billion on bottled water in 2007, a 30-fold increase in consumption per capita since 1976. Producing these bottles used the equivalent of 17 million barrels of oil, excluding the cost of transportation. Whereas bottled water costs $7.50 to $11.00 per gallon, tap water costs $0.01 per gallon. 24% of bottled water sold in the US, including Dasani and Aquafina, is not spring water but simply purified, repackaged tap water.
Compared to bottled water, tap water is regulated more rigorously and tested more frequently by the EPA. Bisphenol-A, the chemical from which 5-gallon water cooler jugs are made, has been linked in 200 independent studies to illnesses including obesity, prostate cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, and brain disorders. 9. Ask Your Legislators Questions About the Environment (and other issues)
Join the Brown Democrats for a discussion with our representatives, State Rep. Edie Ajello and State Senator Rhoda Perry, about major issues currently facing the RI legislature. This event, entitled ‘Better Know Your District’, will take place on Tuesday, November 10, at 8 pm in Wilson 101. Our legislators also look forward to taking questions and hearing about what is important to you, so be sure to ask them about their views and about pending environmental bills! We hope to see you there! More info: Jeremy_Feigenbaum@Brown.edu
10. Hear Sen. Whitehouse Speak About the Environment (and other issues)
The second event in the Democrats’ Better Know Your District series will take place on Friday, November 13, at 2 pm in Salomon 101. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse will give an update from DC and then take questions on issues ranging from health care reform to cap-and-trade. We hope you can make it!
