EmPower Meeting
9/27/09
I. Ryan introduces emPower (again): explains our structure
II. Takeaways from the YSEC Conference: (conference that 6 of us attended this weekend at Yale)
Ben: EcoVillages; we’re already past a point of acceptable consumption: our work is very important
Keally: Explained structure of conference; really enjoyed learning about PowerMapping, way to organize campaigns
Maya: many moments where she felt overwhelmed; hearing facts that you know can get a bit gloomy; Mass Climate Network is really strong student network; wants to get that here, too; makes you realize that we can do it!
Shane: idea: create a fund for working on efficiency projects and say the money saved can go towards getting better concert acts (UConn is doing that)
Ari: We can do it!
III. Project groups
Beyond the Bottle (Ari):
Campus Climate (Ana): Is breaking up into different subgroups to work on individual projects. Some of those are: Water Conservation/rainwater collection/toilets/solar water heating (Tim); Thermal Imaging exhibits to raise awareness on campus to illustrate building inefficiencies (Adam); Beyond the Bag to get rid of plastic bag consumption on campus (Melanie)
Lobbying (Nick): Trying to influence American Clean Energy and Security Act to get it passed; 350.org day of action on Oct. 24th, rallies, working with student groups, public art installation on the Main Green, phone banks
Outreach (Jonathan): Visiting high schools to talk about climate change with high schoolers, sustainability issues, how we’re gonna reach out to these schools; link up with other RI colleges to get a larger network educating
ICE (Clay): Working to create an Institute for Climate and Energy on campus; looking for help organizing a speaker series on campus
CCURB (Shane): Community Carbon Use Reduction at Brown seeks to offset carbon at Brown by doing student-generated projects
